I read on one of the other game sites that so many people had this same access violation issue that the developer put out a version that was patched for this. It was released December 16th by the date of the developer's comment, so try downloading again and see if GH has bothered to get the newer version yet, or bug the GH admin/techs to get the fixed version available for download- or go somewhere that has the fixed version.
Im not real pleased that I have seen other game sites report updating their downloads with fixes, but Ive never seen Gamehouse refer to keeping their copies of games updated to the newest available from the developers. They might, but I have never seen them say they do.

Just to throw in my 2 coppers, I have had a number of both the free games and the full games not work after you hit the play button- they just disappear out of memory. Not even error text. After spending a couple months with clueless techs over one game that errored out and never getting any real help, (I sent my dxdiag, didnt get any new answer) I got sick of them asking me the same questions I already answered, while ignoring the new info I gave, so I stopped the inquiry.
I had just signed up for a game pass despite the problems when I discovered that the exact game that wont launch when dl'd from Gamehouse WILL work when dl'd from the competitor. I cancelled the game pass & am going there.

You'll probably find they are set off by any game site, but werent caused by them.

I have seen pop ups for those rogue programs (but not on gamehouse) and the only way to avoid being infected (besides using noscript in Firefox) is to NOT try to click out of them- I immediately {ctrl alt del} to taskmanager and close the browser process, which stops them dead.
An interaction with the browser or the pop up window will otherwise trigger it to drop its load.

There is a respected tool for removing rogue programs, I suggest researching it, called smitfraudFix, be careful- there's similar named programs that are rogues. Look up a blog called " S!Ri.URZ " Yes I know it looks lame but thats the real name, google it. They focus on revealing rogue programs & other "scareware"; and link to the real download spot for smitfraudfix.

Note Avira makes a real antivirus program called Avira Antivir, the one that's not by Avira is the rogue. I had forgotten that one.

Ah actually I hadn't even noticed - the name of the program I run IS "ANVIR Task Manager" after all. I never even paid close attention to the name, I just knew it came from a clean source, and it is a very useful program.

Still, I would recommend going somewhere besides a game forum to learn how to remove malware.

Incidentally I have never had any malware result from downloading from this site.
I practice "safe computing" and have never had any malware on this computer since I started using it in fact

thought gamepass was obsolete, holdover from a previous offer & no longer available, which means that less & less people will have it as time goes by, although i cant really remember how it was supposed to work.
Didnt know it appeared for people who buy funtickets.

I saw once someone say they were going to post the tomorrow's game, but never saw any more posts on it. Figured it annoyed GH and they shut that down.
Must be in lounge, I never go there.

Was it just me or did anyone else see the free game of the day change midday the other day? From the vegas wedding one (which crashed for me) to I forget what hidden object one, but it continued through the following day.

Ok the point at hand- please review the policy regarding displaying "Tomorrow's free game" - the only ones who CARE about this info are the ones who are interested in possibly downloading the commercial interrupted games. However for those with the funpass- this information is completely irrelevant! Who wants a game you have to deal with commercial interruptions in, when you can download and play ANY game, totally commercial-free? If you are interested to see if you may possibly want to own the game, you just download and play it free.
So you deny that info to those most interested in knowing what that game will be, and promote it as a "benefit" to those who dont have reason to be interested. Bad marketing move!
Just my 2 cents.

On the upside, some of the previously commercial games work. One thing Gamehouse wont like is one new one happens to work without the gamehouse wrapper at all, as if I had paid for it, well thats how they work when you buy them from yahoo games, the wrapper goes away. i havent bought straight out any from GH yet, Im assuming they do that. If not, thumbs down to that!
Another thought GH wont be thrilled over (get over it) is after the GH trial Im going to try the shockwave trial, see if they have as many issues running, not sure if its the game itself (should be the same exact problems) or if its Gamehouse's wrapper, in which case the problems would be different, if at all. A new machine might avoid them all, but cant do that right now. Wonder if their tech support is any better. Be interesting to see just which games are included in the "300" that GH has that shockwave doesnt.

Its called a false positive. Established sites are not the ones you get nasties from, they take care of that before you ever get access to the files.

Most of the time when people see bad behavior (like the unending pop ups) its the fault of an activated trojan/virus that was ALREADY in place, and was waiting for certain actions to fire off, not the program your currently opening, unless it came from a questionable/unconfirmed source.

Often those activations are part of fake anti-virus "scanners" that want you to think they "found" something and now you must pay them to clean the infection they 'found", when in reality that fake antivirus (known as a "rogue" program) is the infection. (They never do ANYTHING, even if you do fall for it and pay them)

Stick with well established anti-malware products that have confirm-able recommendations by established organizations/companies.

Take note, if you changed things you dont want changed any more- run the program to change them back BEFORE uninstalling.

There are few ways to uninstall the product. Choose any of following ways.

1. Open Control Panel, switch to “Add/Remove Programs”. Go to “AnVir Security Suite” and click Remove.
2. In the Start menu open AnVir Security Suite->Uninstall AnVir Security Suite.
3. In Explorer open folder where the product is installed and run “AnVir.exe Uninstall”.
Settings of the program are not deleted during uninstall.

Note: if you disabled some startup items or moved them to delayed startup list, enable them before uninstall, if you want them to run on Windows startup.

Shockwave unlimited is cheaper- but it runs exactly the same way. You have to be connected to the internet to sign into your game. You dont have to stay online (and I dont think you have to remain online to use funpass either) but you do have to connect to validate your subscription when you start the game, same as funpass.

Trouble with Shockwave is they seem to be missing the better games. I could be wrong I havent spent much time there, it just seems low budget. They do have a 10 day trial tho.

Everyone's internet goes out periodically some time or other- my life would be in sad shape if I couldnt survive not having a game because the internet was temporarily out (its never been out for weeks- only hours- otherwise Id change providers)
However, my mother no longer controls or pays any of my bills. Im 46 years old.

I ran into a bug in mine too- when you get to the last puzzle before the end- the directions made NO sense to me. I clicked on several things but it still made no sense.
So i did what I usually do for that type of problem, logged out of the game, and went to the internet and googled a walk through, and found an explanation for the puzzle- which then made sense. I reloaded the game to finish (I noticed by the walkthrough that once I finished the puzzle, then i would get to see the ending). But when it loaded, it put up the puzzle bugged- nothing was on the totem, so nothing at ALL happened when i clicked any tile! I tried clicking the hints, I read you could skip out of mini games that way- but all it did was highlight one tile, either it meant click it (and nothing happened) or the monkey piece I was trying to find was behind it. There was NO fix. Now if I want to see the end- I have to repeat the ENTIRE game - and I was at 4 hours 42 min- because you cant back up.

Well mostly for anyone who's followed any of my comments, I signed up for the funpass trial, figured I'd get the year's membership about next week, (its HALF the cost that way- incidentally, I dont see anywhere on the site to actually select the year's membership as opposed to the monthly) so why not extend that by a free week, wanted to get to Mortimer anyway. Well Mortimer ran fine, but was I surprised to see so far the "free with commercials" games I downloaded that WORKED, now do not load at ALL when I enter them through the funpass login! Whats up with that???
They lock up my system and only way out is a hard boot -ie, the power button! (Ones that didnt run still dont run either)
I thought wont it be nice these games that dont load, stutter and/or crash/pause, should now all run smooth now that I can play the full version- but no, they dont run at all! HOW can this be MY system- my same computer RAN the game, when it was being interrupted??
Its becoming beyond frustrating.

Unlike you pros, I appreciate the tips and walkthroughs It will be awhile before one shows up online when a game is brand new. i also happen to like jigsaw puzzles...
just dont want to fork over 20 for the game now and then a years worth of fun pass in a couple weeks...I rarely replay finished games anyway

Im probably going to get a funpass soon(if GH doesnt aggravate me too much!) and I thought Id ask some questions for those who use the funpass (unlimited "rentals")
The commercial that Ive seen hundreds of times for funpass says choose from 350 games- info on the site says (in some places) choose from 900 - which is correct? More to the point, what % of the games on the site are REALLY included in their "includes most of" the games on the site language? Whats left out- newest games?
How is it you can tell which are available with funpass? Is that something you can't see until you log in with the fun pass membership? (Like the "tomorrows game today" box - kind of moot, why would I want to d/l the free game with commercials when i can d/l & play the game commercial-free with the funpass?]
Has anyone run into many crashing issues with the full games as opposed to the with commercial versions? And for bonus points, anyone find themselves actually buying many when you can just "rent"?

On Sun Jan 17 21:28:36 PST 2010, Summer said:

Yes it happens alot- i think it happens more with certain games than others- and I knew it was happening to more people than just me, but some responses- and tech supports nonchalance- make it seem like no one else has this issue.
I have really cut back on how many I download, because many times the entire game wont even play. I know its the commercial trying to start that crashes it.
I cant play the kitten game- every time when it finishes the load bar (after showing the game splash screens) the game crashes and disappears.
Its becoming all too common, if they want this to be a method to show the games off, and attract customers for other games, they need to make them more compatible with the commercial software. Crashing does NOT make me want to buy games, at least not from GH.

Probably should have started a new thread I guess.
But to (loosely) quote another person who commented on some irritating games- the reason some of us play things like HOGs and untimed puzzle games is because we dont have (good) hand-eye coordination to begin with!
Therefore a test of this "skill" is just plain not fun!
trust me, I do not buy games that "challenge" a skill I already know I dont have.

I agree there! How did it ever become standard anyway for HOG's to include a "mini game"?
I would totally prefer if they didnt have any. Most are types that I havent the slightest interest in doing.
Do the developers really think object hunting is so boring you HAVE to have a break of doing something else? If thats their opinion they seriously need to make different kinds of games and leave the HOGs to someone who actually likes them.
I like jigsaw type puzzles, but I really dont see why I need to stop and do one in the middle of my HOG. I like card games too... but why would I stop and play solitaire when I deliberately chose to do hidden objects?
I say skip the minis and just add things to do with the objects you found ala Samatha Swift, Mortimer Beckett, etc.

Thanks. I have no doubt it works for others which is why its so frustrating. (Although I doubt Im the ONLY one this happens to!) I assure you, several games that I once happily played with no problems just suddenly stop. Hard to diagnose and troubleshoot that sort of odd action.
Its not a defrag issue, Im running my machine all night as extra heat so plenty of time to run defrags often.
The one thing that seems most likely is video card/driver issues, although even that seems odd for something that worked once. There is a new driver, but its a sort of catch-all driver for a number of cards, and it monstrous huge- like 60 or 80 megs- were talking driver here- and it does horrible things to my system. Looks awful, other things that worked dont work, loads a huge control program which I dont need (and one of its screens locks up too).. so no help on that side. Someday Ill get a new machine I suppose and it will all run. Until then the free games continue to frustrate me.

I checked my copy for that level, but it doesnt let you jump to specific levels, even after you beat it, and mine happens to be saved at level 44 atm...there is a way I can tell you that, because I have finished, I think twice. Usually, they involve using the right power ups. Try describing the set up of that level (where youre stuck specifically) , meanwhile I'll try getting back to that level again & get back to you.
Its a really good game except for that caveat!

I think the errors I have seen have all been in the free games- its a result of them including the software that interrupts the game with the commercials, and when you have the whole intact game it runs fine. Its the way the commercial software interacts with, or was meshed with, the game that creates the problems. Some mesh better than others- some generate alot of errors.
I have never ran into any trials that errored, I imagine if they did its a problem with the person's hardware being incompatible, not a flaw in the game or every single person who d/l the game would be complaining it didnt work.

Did I say only 10% did the vanishing act? Let me update that, we're 2 for 2 on "relic-" titled games now that just go POOF when you hit play. By the task manager, they stay active about 2 seconds, more or less, then simply disappear without a trace. Where's John Walsh when you need him.

If this is the new trend, obviously Im done with free games because theyre denying me the ability to open them. (Yes firewall & security programs were disabled).

Today's game really sounded good too, unlike the other one that got panned.

Just from my experience- not a thing. Even if the game doesnt work that day. They will reply with the standard canned messages, & say they recommend uninstalling & redownloading, but obviously you can't.(Only I HAVE done just that on many free games that went weird same day- no change).
Some of them never work from day 1, some work fine, then after I dont play a week or two, when I load it again, they mysteriously begin erroring out/crashing -as if they have some sort of built in "expiration" which they of course arent supposed to have.

In the end they will say its free so there isnt much they can do.

I just wonder if when you purchase a game with problems, does the tech support actually solve anything or do they rely on the same canned answers that ignore your answers?
Do they even give you any better tech support for nonworking games when you have the monthly pass thing since you technically arent buying the games? Hmmmm.
Questions Im reluctant to find the answers to.

Forgot to say, despite the reviews, being as it was free, it didnt hurt any to try it out, it could be entertaining for a short while at least. But since it is one of those that disappears, well I'll never know, because I sure aint gonna buy it if I cant even try it; and most reviewers with a rating said it was junk anyway.
Interestingly when I had tried to add the game to my firewall manually, it said that the game already exists in the list- but looking at the (long) list of programs that are in its "given permission" list, it doesnt appear- many somehow have odd names, but they always have the same icon- nothing with that icon or name is in the firewall's list, yet I can't add it. Thats why I tried it with the fw off. Wonder if thats the case with all the disappearing free games.

Its another one of the mysteriously vanishing games for me.
I read the reviews, most negative (some so outrageously positive, Im inclined to believe they are fakes, just to see if anyone falls for it.)
But when I hit start the game just goes away. I uninstalled & redownloaded, all with the firewall disabled to keep it from interfering, & ran the task manager while I tried to launch- I saw "relic hunter.exe" open when the tabbed Gamehouse box came up, but when I hit play, it jumps to 95% cpu use and then just vanishes from the task list (takes about 2 seconds). No error ever comes up, it just plain ends. This happens to about 10% of the games for me, and GH wont help because its a free game. Useless.

High class. That's the ticket. Perhaps we can't expect games of that caliber free DAILY, but more often sure would be great, then I might go back to telling people to go check the daily game again- I stopped telling friends when the games got too embarrassing to tell anyone about. I grabbed that "games" folder and dragged it to the desktop with the RIGHT mouse button, and when I let go, I chose "create a shortcut here."
After a game has installed and dropped the shortcut onto my desktop, I grab it and drop it into that folder (games).

I found out long ago to never trust ANY information to the preset microsoft folders -[my documents, my pictures, blah blah]. If your windows get corrupted in any manner, when you reinstall, repair or restore windows, everything in those folders goes POOF.
I lost hundreds of irreplaceable personal files without warning doing that- nothing else on the drive was changed- windows rebuilt the "my documents" tree without asking if I wanted to save the info before "repairing" it.

There's three tabs in the window that opens. Select the one that fits the method you used.
IE, if you bought the "fun pass" (which is really unlimited rentals for the time period you paid)
then you use the first tab. if you bought the game with a "fun ticket" you use the "register game" tab. Youll see when you click the tab it asks you- "already purchased the game?" You make sure your info is filled in and you click register. The free trial tab is for games your just playing the demo or for one of the free games of the day.
If I recall correctly, once you use the register button, it wont open the gamehouse box anymore when you open the game- it will just open the game.
Also at the bottom of that box that opens with the tabs, when you click the game- theres a link on the left bottom side that says "SUPPORT" . That will open Internet explorer to the support page.

I play primarily HOG, and once Im done I dont have any interest in replaying them. So when the budget is ready & I know Ill be spending some game time, I plan to get the pass.
If I really want to "buy" a game for replaying I prefer to get it on a disk so i know I have it if I change computers or whatever else happens. You never know with these electronic agreements, anything can change. The ones I did buy were just to be able to finish them.

So I found a prog called Text Tally, by a company called Harmony Hollow (google it) Its tiny and can be run on demand and just counts (characters words and lines) whats in your clipboard (just highlight and right click "copy"). Its good to have a free service like that, even ad-supported, but offering something that only "sort of" & "sometimes" works is a big frustration.

Still, its like going to McDonalds and they offer a free burger, 1 to a customer, but some people only receive an empty wrapper, while others get a burger- and they say "oh well, it was free."

I think have read somewhere or other its midnight Pacific time, which happens to be 2 am my time (central), but it could be when they get around to it
Im not usually up then to check... just some days they dont even have the info page ready, just the name, and some days the screen shots arent correct or dont work when you click...
they just dont invest alot of work in the whole "free" thing.
Odd that certain games they repeat, even frequently, but a certain other game I have specifically been waiting for to be repeated hasnt shown up...

Thats true-I didnt mention it, but I do know the games work for some, but if it isnt working for me- Im sure Im not the only one.
I know its ad related, when I have crashes with some of them, its always when an ad is going to load.
Its seems to be how they are integrated with the particular game, or which ad it is.
But the ones that do this, always do it. Ive been the whole 9 yards with what they offer for tech support for free games and it didnt change anything.
In reality its not the game that doesn't work, its their ad delivery system. It just varies per game how it is integrated, and apparently they do a cleaner job with some than others.
But the end result is the same- game dont work.

Im losing count of how many of the daily free games simply don't work.
By don't work, I mean after downloading & installing, you get the wrapper to load no problem, then once you hit play ( free trial tab) the wrapper closes and-- nothing.
Nothing at all. No error. No crash. No screen flash - nothing whatsoever.I downloaded 146 megs of .. nothing.
I tried with firewall on and off (some of the free dailies requires disabling it, some will play with it active, even tho they all get the same full permissions).
I have used dozens of the free daily games, so I doubt its my system and settings.
I have stopped doing support tickets thats fruitless. (No, redownloading and installing does NOT work.)
Just saying, Im really fed up. Some days I dont bother to download one I might like because theres a good chance it wont work.
If I were an advertiser, I'd put my advertising dollars somewhere else I knew people would be seeing it. If the advertisers give up- the free game promotion is history.

sorry *the coding TO run commercials

had to edit to fit in their 1000 character limit and missed that when I rewrote it to make it shorter.
Bitter? No, just frustrated and resigned. There were some really interesting ones I looked forward to playing that never even started. (Reinstalling that day does not help)

"how does the free game of the day work?"

I would also add- sometimes badly, or not at all.
Sometimes the coding run commercials works better than others. Sometimes they come between levels, but sometimes they interrupt. In one HOG they always hit every time you had exactly 2 objects left. The game then skipped to the next level as if you had finished.
There has been more than a handful of games that absolutely will not run for me - wont even start. Some crash almost every commercial, some I have to disable my firewall, others happily run with firewall intact.
I have given up on their tech support. Being the games are free, they really don't care. I have spent months for one game, they repeat the same canned answer then ask me something I just answered. They have never fixed any of the issues.

So its just what it is, free, and it may or may not work. And it may work and then suddenly stop working. There's always more people to see the ads, apparently.
Just my experiences, ymmv.

"seems to be" is subjective.
I like HOG and have been disappointed there havent been as many... and some they offer are just crappy examples.
Its really a matter of what's being released though and what they have license or right to carry when it comes to new demo/download games.

It was nice to have, "tomorrow's free game", listed so I would know in advance what it would be and if liked, be SURE to get it...

I noticed that was missing too, thought at first it was a glitch but its stayed that way. i liked it too, so i could be sure to plan to get the games I was interested in.
However if my current situation continues, its moot... I keep getting downloads where that the "wrapper" will load just fine, but when you click play now, the game itself never starts.
(Today's game for example.)
