I contacted the Ironcode website help and through several replies to my problem finally got this answer that finally worked:
(a) Put random coloured sands in the hellfire until you get a sound and it tells you that something is wrong. The hellfire will now turn to white color.
(b) Now follow the instructions to extinguish it.
Basically, you have to start when the hellfire is white in color.
I was then able to use the scroll spell I found and the transporter worked!! Now I am successfully (so far) playing the game and I really like it.
