The Nancy Drew games (not the Dossier series) usually take a few days to complete. The minigames can be quite 'thinky' and that's also what I prefer. I just run into too many minigames in the series that are too clicky for me to do without keyboard options to control the cursor. Unfortunately I haven't found keyboard options for most casual games.

I think some of the puzzle games can almost be like collections of minigames. You just have to try a lot of them. And if you buy the HOGs that you like which have minigames that you love, SOME of them do allow you to just play just the minigames after you unlock each of the new ones that occur in the game--normally these minigames can be played via an option in the startup window.

I usually enjoy minigames but find it really annoying as you do if the game cannot be skipped for some reason. I have a mobility issue in my hands, so I cannot play arcade type games that require mouse movements. I am great with some of the old arcade style games that gave keyboard options (Tetris) but for the most part, casual games are entirely mouse dependent.

AND when the game has a generally relaxed mode, that's what I usually play. So it's really annoying to run into arcade style games in an otherwise great game. I think the Nancy Drew series can be especially bad this way, making it impossible to find out the end of the mystery til there is some way to get past a minigame. ugh.

This discussion probably belongs in another category. But I know that angst!

FunPass actually is a different thing than FunTICKET. The Tickets are what you are trying to spend. The PASS is something entirely different.

To buy a game using your FunTICKET(s) you have at least two methods. One, play the game and when the rectangular box comes up, you can click on the BUY NOW option and a popup will ask you if you want to use one of your TICKETS.
The other method to buy a game you're already playing is to find the game's page on GH then click the buy button and follow the prompts.

FunPASS is actually a monthly fee that enables you to play (and finish!) all the games without buying them. There is a free trial of one week to try out FunPASS. My understanding of it is that if you use the whole week of FunPASS for free.. then you are automatically subscribed for a month and your credit is charged.

It won't install for me. I downloaded: GamesManager-Installer.exe
Clicked to install.

then Error popup box in XP Pro:
(X) "windows cannot find 'bin\bstrapInstall.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
And then, when I tried to play a game I just bought and unlocked (Mishap). The game would not start...

(i) "Failed to open "main.cs"
and then
(i) "Failed to initialize game, shutting down."
Reinstalling the game gets it playing correctly.
I've already tried installing twice. Get the same results (the manager will not install, then the game will not play), and reinstalled the game each time in order to run the game from its shortcut.

Not inclined to do more mobius loops for the Beta manager, but I'm glad it's in the works.

crochetinc,

Definitely even this chat option is more work for the user than any php or simple machines chat. Hope it gets better than this to create and track subscriptions and be aware when there's a response. Truly it sucks now.

Like you, I also had a couple games that would not work after the change over. No idea why since some games still play as they always did and remained unlocked. Could be some corruption developed in the data files.

What I did, was log into my GH account and from the Profile, click on My Games. Then download the ones that are giving problems. Install them one by one. And after installing one, take the middle tab and click to register your game. This has worked for two I had to reinstall. One game was "retired' from RA/GH although I still see the game listed by other vendors so was not available for download.

My fave Match-3 is Big Kahuna Reef 2 (BKR2).. as after you complete the base game levels, hundreds user created board sets can be played built-in or just seconds to download. You can play in timed or relaxed mode. And you can play it by yourself or as a 'mouse party' with other people on the same computer screen--by competitive mode or cooperatively.

I frequently download new boards to play and love the creativity of some of the donated boards at the Reflexive site. Some of the boards are easy or can be fairly difficult and need a strategy. Some board designers have personal styles that make their new boards something to really look forward to. You can create your own game sets and put some of your own artwork into the boards.

BKR2 comes with a swimming fish screen saver. I got BKR2 at RealArcade and added the screensaver via download from another game vendor. There are over a hundred kinds of fish can be unlocked and may swim about as you play.

Thanks for this comment. Very useful.

There is often a latent period from between a malware release and ability for detectors to find them. So sometimes being paranoid helps.

But really thanks for the Comcast Security notice. I went to get more info. I use Comcast for broadband and have several home computers that now have it installed. Thanks!

I have lots of games from RA and sometimes like to play them again. Some games were retired so you might not be able to get them all back.

Log in to your profile (My Account) and click on "My Games" where it says: My Games - Profile - Memberships - Forums - Support

You will probably see your list of games there.

I think the OP had the same issue I had. The uninstall file had gone missing. So there is no automatic way to uninstall. Removing the folders and removing where the game is saved, then a registry cleaner, seems to work. This was the issue for me. There is no Real Arcade uninstall option as there is no longer a console that works with my games.

However, even if you do use windows uninstall, the saved game folders might not be included with the game's uninstall applet and be located as subfolder in a hidden folder. This part may have to be done manually.

"Mary Kay Andrews - The Fixer Upper" using FunPass. I had two kinds of errors.

A. It was not saving my progress the first three tries.
B. It would sometimes 'crash' to desktop when I logged in with FunPass. Screen would go black as the game 'connected', then the desktop would appear again. (see Event Viewer error)

I regained the game's ability to remember my progress by reinstalling as stated. However, subsequently the game resumed exiting to desktop.

The thread with more info regarding the Event Viewer is here. I did not update the link with info below.

In what became the last 20 minutes of play, FunPass would get desktop when I tried to play the game. Ugh. I downloaded a 60 minute trial from another vendor and finished the game in minutes. At least the game save was still working.

blwboo, if your mom has a landline, you might be able to connect her computer with a FREE dialup service. All over the country there are some free dialups. The internet service is free, but you might have to pay longdistance to connect long enough to do the registration.

One of my family members didn't have internet and there were times when I really appreciated having a dialup so I could connect from their house. If the computer in question is a laptop too, you can probably connect at some wireless public access point to do this. I have a Starbucks account and can use the internet from there if needed.

I had this problem many times since the holidays. This answer might not apply to you at all but here goes...

I use Comcast for broadband and sometimes there is a DNS issue -- too much lagging going on as a connection (port 80) tries to establish-- and sometimes Gamehouse connections in particular seem to be running very slow, while other sites load slowish or much faster. I just close that game login window and retry again. It is very annoying.

Some associates of mine have said that Comcast has a new cable modem and if you contact them, they'll replace take your old one and give you a new one. (it annoys me they don't just email users of old modems and tell them!) So I'll probably have to ask for a replacement modem. Also, if you use a router for multiple home network computers to plug them into the cable modem, then be sure to have the latest firmware installed on your router.

This has also happened to me. What I did was completely uninstall the game. Clear recycle bin, then reboot.

Then turn off antiVirus, antiMalware and any other program that might be interfering.
Then download the game again and try to play.

This has worked for me a couple times. Some games never give a problem.

The uninstall and the download? This seems to be so much of a hassle now. It was alot easier when it was Real Arcade.
I asked a similar question recently but didn't contact support. What I have done is just delete the obvious file then run a registry cleaner to clear anything that gets unconnected. I do agree it is nicer to have a one-spot location for the game to do it all.

I have learned that some game saved folders may never be deleted even if you used the Windows uninstall. So game designers may have done that intentionally or not. I was surprised to download an old game and found my progress saved from when I last played it, three years ago. So now I make a note of where the games might be saved. It could be located in a number of places.

I had this problem with another game on the site. It was not saving my game and sometimes not even letting me log back into the game. Alternate games downloaded from the same time, worked fine.

I tried to find the folder where the saved games for that game were supposed to be stored. (it was something like C:\Documents and Settings\=user ID=\Application Data\*game subfolder* -Application Data is a hidden folder). Each of the games does not always save files in the same areas. It's rather chaotic.

If a game seems to install or starts running in a hinky way---now I locate the game save file if I was able to play it, then copy it. Next reinstall the game over the previous, and sometimes this fixes it. But if that doesn't fix it, uninstall game, clear recycle bin, =reboot=, turn off antivirus, firewall, anti-malware and then reinstall. That's really a PITA. But this has helped with some of the hinky installs I've had. YMMV.

You will need some extra mice, USB mice are ideal but whatever works on your system.

I own Big Kahuna Reef2 (BKR2) - which is a match 3 with fun explosive events and interesting puzzles. The game can be played in 'competitor mode' or 'cooperative mode'. I don't own the other games and not all of them are 'match 3' --but this is a list compiled using a result from internet search of

'reflexive mouse party'

I added 'Reflexive' to the search since I know they have some of these games, and a list would probably contain their info.

A list of games that allow mouse party are -

Ricochet Infinity
Monarch: the Butterfly King
Big Kahuna Reef 2: Chain Reaction
Big Kahuna Words
Big Kahuna Reef
- all by Reflexive Entertainment

Magic Match: Journey to the Lands of Arcane
- by Codeminion Dev Studios
Astariel

This malware issue is an interesting one. I think that malware usually initializes over your system when you reboot, with certain new processes running after startup. Some processes use duplicate names as the legit ones which makes detection even harder. And malware continues to get trickier.

The last time I had any malware was a few years ago. I ran several unsuccessful cleanups. The malware was able to re-initialize the way my system did internet search until it was cleaned out. Finally, I had to use Hijack This from TrendMicro and go through masses of stuff in my registry to remove it.

The infection came from a UK news-site with an infected Iframe and I was only there for a few seconds. I rebooted a day or so later and then my problems began. Makes it harder to remember where I got hit. The malware tried to phone home, repeatedly and really screwed up my browser.

Now I use noscript on Firefox, which probably helps when I land on an unknown site momentarily.

Part II

Remember some of the file sharing systems that had ads, and many people trusted them and downloaded music. What could go wrong... if ad company has buggy software (a hole) or advertisers slip in an ad that links to a site with poor security this can cause problems.

Bad rap. If there is bad code that ends up on some user machines and one of the anti-malware sites detects it, that can put the adware and even the software company on a blacklist.

Generally speaking, not all adware is bad. But it is a security hole because you 'invite' materials from who knows where, to run on your computer. People who choose to download software but are not informed from the start that it had adware in it are right to be upset.

Many people now assume that 'adware equal bad' for the above and other reasons.

On Sun Jan 31 22:09:28 PST 2010, Gingerchews said:

Will post this in two parts.
I'm not a spokesperson for Trymedia nor GH but can explain a little about adware.

If one knowingly installs or runs an adware version of an online game or other software for a trial, you can have that old bit of software still installed on your system later. It's a given condition of when one agrees to download free software that is supported by ads. People love free stuff, even Yahoo email groups in HTML format come with ads that are downloaded to your computer so that your video card can show you the stuff. You don't know what else the these things might carry.

Adware wasn't always given bad press. Adware driven software, such as email programs, internet utilities (like FTP), and games were very common. The ad vendor has an agreement with the software provider, and this makes it possible to have 'free' goodies. The vendor accepts ads paid for by third party companies and of course doesn't want to destroy their ad business by doing bad things.

I really enjoyed this game and remember that level 78 was a problem for me too.

First, focus mainly at first on Match 4s so you can get the powerups. You want to get the flaming bomb, the max powerup and blow up the frozen/locked tiles at the bottom. Rinse, repeat til the central area is clear for free fall.

General strategy of moving the object pieces away from dropping over the paved tiles at the bottom: Pretend the 0 is the game piece and the X's are matched color tiles. You want to move the O to the sid that will put it over the clear blocks on the bottom so it can 'free fall'.

to move piece to the right: XXOX

General idea to move piece to the right for the vertical:
X
X
OX

Useful tips/cheats you may or maynot want: make backup copy of then edit GameInfo.xml in the Base folder. You can edit the time and number of lives while you're figuring out the schema to tackle the boards. HTH

I think this is a case where you (and I) may be so out of luck. The programmers that design some of these games may or may not eventually rewrite the game for Windows 7--do they have a website? (I also have one of the 'I Spy' games and it is listed on the 'retired' list.

If the game can't be forced with a compatibility mode in your OS, and if you have the right resources, you could set up a dual boot or --set up another machine to run retired games in an older Windows' OSs.

Oh, great idea that may work for many. I started with something similar to your method and loved it! Even had a 'try' folder (GMTA! ). This worked when I had only one main computer, but now it's gotten complicated.

I had to centralize my list last year to a Google text doc because I have several computers on my home network and started buying casual games from several providers. My desktop and my notebook each have different versions of Windows and the hard drive on the notebook is smaller; some games are no longer installed on any machine so I like to know where I can redownload.

Now, if I'm on the road playing a game, I can check my online list from my notebook to make sure I don't buy duplicates; and remember where to go to grab the last game I bought. A spreadsheet with neat columns make it easier on the eyes, lol. This method might work for others as well.

I was redirected to GH when trying to put an old Real Arcade bought game on a new notebook. There was a popup for the 'one time' offer for the Real Arcade migratees. They are DEAD serious about the one time offer thing! You get two games a month instead of just one for your money. If you cancel that two games one, you can't get it back, and if you skipped on making a decision at that initial connection -- well... you snooze/you lose.

If you did go for the two games/mo and later ALSO bought a regular Gamehouse membership (for 1 game/mo) -- makes sense to me to keep the 2 game/mo one. Cancel the one that gives only one game/mo -- Talk to support to make sure you cancel the right one. I know some of us had multiple accounts with RealArcade before the merge which gives some of us another chance to migrate with the two games/mo deal if the initial visit was too confusing. (which it was, for me)
