Looks like it's a common theme for Mac users. 
You click on the symbols you see in the magnifying glass in the order you see them on the gems (i.e. the only clicking you do is when your magnifying glass is on the first symbol then a click, move the glass to the next symbol, then click...etc.).
Chances are you are doing it correctly you just have the same bug.
