My state is going smoke free in public places on July 5th. This means the bars and taverns are included. I totally agree with this law except for the taverns. Some surrounding counties went smoke free last year and it's really hurt some of the bar business.Alot of the bar owners in my town would like it left up to them if they should be smoke free or not.We do have a few bars in town that have no smoking they also serve food. One has smoking at the bar and the dining room is seperate with no smoking. I realize alot of you probley don't smoke, but what do you think?

I live in Ma. When the state banned smoking indoors ( except for bars and taverns that did not serve food ) there was an uproar about places losing business and smokers living in border towns crossing state lines with their business. The furor lasted a few months and then died away. In my neck of the woods, I know of no bar or restaurant or bowling lanes etc. that went belly up because people with a bad habit could not indulge said habit at will. I suspect you will see the same occur where you live.

I agree, Poppa... there's always an uproar at first over new restrictions, and in this case there'd probably be protests, etc. But people do get over it, and people do adapt. They're not gonna give up a "fun" hobby or addiction (like bowling) for an unhealthy one, despite the initial outcry. More outside smoking breaks, and no smoking indoors... it's worked so many other places. yeesh. Remember when folks could smoke on airplanes?

What does everyone think about Britney Murphy's widower Simon Monjack dieing months after she did of vertually the same thing? That poor mom is the one who found them both. How much does that woman have to go through? Any thoughts?

Hey there, ydoi... (and debate is in fun, my friend!) first off, what you wear with your sandals isn't one of the #1 causes of death in the world, and in some charts, THE #1 cause. So restrictions on people spewing out cancer-causing smoke into lungs other than their own is necessary and about time, I'd say... let them smoke in private and do "their choice" of damage to themselves, just like we can't "drink" in public where we could harm others with our actions, but in the privacy of our own homes. And as for your socks, you can darned well wear a black one and a white one and it'll do no harm! Lol!

Hm, candy... seems there are a few things still up in the air about that one... I wasn't familiar, so just looked it up. A charitable fund for the wife that was bogus set up by the mom and Simon? Hmm. And Britney died of pneumonia, anemia and subsequent drug intake, while Simon's death is unknown, or correct me if I'm wrong. But seems the mom was into something shady to cash in on her own daughter's death, so I really can't pity her too much... just from what I know.

We have the same debate in Germany, too, every once in a while. My federal state went through it 1 or 2 years ago. It was a big uproar and you would think, that in the near future there would be no restaurants, taverns and such things. But as Mooma said, people adapted and just very few places closed. I guess, they would have closed anyway. Now, many places have one room just for smoking or an garden etc. where one can step out and take a smoke.
For me it seems, that the restaurants are more filled these days, because people seem to enjoy eating in clear air and stay together longer.

I certainly remember when lighting up was ok in planes. Most airlines would seat the smokers in the back of the plane. I guess they thought then that the passengers in other areas would not be affected by the stench and ill effects of the secondhand smoke. Oh, and ydoi, wearing any color socks with sandals is to me so outre.

I remember my mother smoking in big dept stores in the seventies. They had standing ashtrays placed stratigically all over the store. Also, in the late eighties, when I was a student teacher the teachers lounge was a smoking place. Now you can't smoke on the property at all. Many of the teachers now who smoke take their lunch or planning period and drive off of the property to smoke. What I'm not understanding is the secondhand smoke. Most of us grew up with smoking parents, siblings, aunts , uncles who smoked and we really have no ill effects. Why is it different today? Is the smoke different?

Do any of you have a guilty pleasure? Be it food, a TV show, reading material etc. I have a couple. I like watching ( gasp ) Judge Judy, not every day now but a 2-3 times a week. I love the way she handles the low lifes who are dumb enough to appear on the show. By the way, did you know she earns 30 million $$$ a year for doing the program? My other guilty pleasure is cashew nuts, the guilt coming from the fact I end up eating the entire can in one sitting!!

Our local paper reported another gangbang shooting where one idiot gang member killed a rival gangbanger all because the dead guy was on the wrong street corner. The way I see it, that's one less bad guy to deal with and the other will spend the rest of his life in the slammer.
The paper reported the dead guy's family as saying " He was such a good boy, always willing to help a friend" Give me a break as the deceased had a criminal rap sheet 7 pages long according to the police. All over the country, the gangs should be put in a large area with all the guns they want. The last one standing wins!!

That sounds a bit barbaric, Poppa, but I hate to say that it IS a good idea! At least for those who aren't "newbies" at this and still have a chance at rehabilitation. And as for parents saying "he was such a good boy," ain't that always the truth from the parents who don't really know what their kids ARE doing, and even the ones that THINK they know. It's always a surprise and a denial to learn what your child's "second life" really is, or should I say "real life." Not the way they act in front of mommy. I once had to call a mother who's 21-yr-old "child" did $1,000 worth of damage to my car with his FIST, and she said, "Oh you're lying... that just doesn't sound like my Markie." I told her to come on over and watch him in action on the street some night and listen to the real language he speaks.

Let's debate on the light side. I think Bob DeNiro is the best actor we have. He can play any type of role and is always convincing in his portrayals. On the other hand Will Ferrell still cannot act his way out of a paper sack. He's awful!! Who are your personal picks and pans?

On the female side, Jennifer Anniiston is the most beautiful, vivacious actress and just lights up the screen. However, Angelina Jolie wants to think she is an actress and walks too far on the darkside for me with the wearing of those blood vials around her neck and always appearing in black. Jennifer is sunshine and Angelina is darkness. Thats the way I see them both.

Cage certainly has had a mixed bag career. I thought he was terrific in his Oscar winning role in LEAVING LAS VEGAS. But that film was so depressing. I loved his work in MOONSTRUCK where Cher won hers. The NATIONAL TREASURE movies were also a lot of fun. I think a lot of actors read scripts they enjoy but it turns out movie goers end up disliking the movie.

Hey Russ, it's too bad we cannot discuss religion and politics here. I bet you and I would have some spirited chats as I guess we are polar opposites in our mindsets.

I believe I could do this. The key is to talk to the subject and not snipe at each other. I agree that opinions will probably not be changed but we will be able to see a different perspective. That is what I was fond of at the beginning of the old R/A forums. We used to have some spirited debates and as long as we did not start raving we where aloud. Same thing over at the swamp. Unfortunately the new breed of moderator came on seen and it was easier for them to ban subjects of discussion instead of actually moderating them. This is the norm today in most of the social forums in game rooms which is a drag. You know we can always try to have one, set some rules and go at it. If wild Bill wants to shut it down let him, if something is too edgy I think we are adult enough to either ignore, walk away or amend after pondering.

Yea they are a fine fish to catch. YDO fishing with worms LOL. Most experienced fishermen use artificial bait or jigs or a fly to catch sport fish. I usually troll with a worm on one line and cast with artificial. For small mouth in my area I have had some luck with a top water frog which I tied a small spoon to. But I am no expert by any means. I mainly enjoy getting out on the lake and relaxing.

Live worms!!! Heaven forbid. Most avid fishermen/women never use live bait. Mostly because it's boring. Now soft plastic worms are a whole other ball game. The majority of bass anglers agree that when fishing is tough and they won't hit anything else, they will strike plastic worms. By the way, the Maine trip was really good. The numbers of fish caught was good although nothing of bragging size. My buddy Dave saw and landed a $10 bill that was on the bottom of the lake in about 4 feet of water. Never saw that before. We put the Hamilton on a hook and I took a picture of it for laughs.

OK Russ...let's go ( all you other Loungers too !! ) Who among the talking heads on network news can you listen to and who are the ones you just cannot abide for a second. To me, among the best are Bill Maher and Keith Olberman. Not only does this hint to my political bent but these guys can and do interject some humor into their rants even when they are exagerating the facts. I must also make mention of the comedian Lewis Black who is often laugh out loud funny. He was always at his best lambasting the most recent Bush administration. Conversely, the men I cannot stand at all include Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter and the worst of the bunch Glen Beck.

Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter Glen Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and several other conservatives is who I listen too. Also you like people who exaggerate the facts, in other words they are lieing to make it humorous so they can suck you in. I especially like the way Glen Beck is Going to our forefathers original words to clarify his statements. And P if you are going to call people names then we can not have a discussion. This approach is childish and antagonistic. Seems that you prefer comedians instead of commentators. If they really wanted to stop the oil flow then they should blow it up and seal they thing. We have offers from numerous countries to help with equipment and resources but our President dismisses them. They have promised National guard to secure our borders but they never sent them and just this week I read that parts of Arizona are declared off limits because the Mexican criminals are over running it.

Coming soon a nation without borders or sovereignty.

This is exactly what I want from the DEBATE ZONE as having nothing but fluff here is not good for the brain. You and I both know that most of what comes out of Foxnews and MSNBC is nothing more than bullfeathers. THere is hardly any balanced reporting anymore anywhere. The fact that the neocons fail to interject any humor at all speaks ill of them. If there is one thing the planet needs more of is some good laughs. I used to think that Hannity was the worst of the bunch you adore. Beck takes the cake though. I only wish that someone had laced the cake with a healthy portion of Exlax!!!

To clarify. You are vilifying their commentators not me, However I think you are doing so for the sole purpose of trying to start an argument, not a debate. This is why they don't want us talking politics. Your zero's comment for example you know that would be offensive, but you like the mud slinging. I don't know what your problem is today but you are acting as you have in the past with these outlandish remarks to try to stir something up. Do you know the definition of debate? Because this sure as heck isn't one.

Hence why I must lock this thread.

I have no problems with our community having deep intelligent discussions on just about any topic: literature, astrophysics, history, film and television. Still, there are two specific no-nos when it comes to discussion in the lounge: Religion and Politics. The reason for this is that conversations of this nature involve people's core values (those most inflexible parts of us that define who we are) and nearly always break down into a heated argument where things get nasty and the forum mods have to step in to break things up. Bill and I simply don't have the time or resources to police this thread (or even an entirely separate forum) to keep things civilized.

There are forums on the internet where you can go and discuss these things but this most certainly is not an appropriate venue.

I find no one at fault for this particular instance. Bill and I have been watching this thread to see if things would be stable enough to let it go unmoderated but I decided to nip things in the bud before it escalated out of control.
