An I'm-just-curious-question for those who use an e-reader .............

Ok. I lied. More than one question:

1.) Do you prefer to use your e-reader or to hold an actual book in your hands? Or do you like them equally? Why?

2.) What made you decide to get an e-reader in the first place? Why did you choose the one that you have?

Me? I never thought I'd like an e-reader. But on an impulse, I ordered a NOOKcolor from Overstock.com a few weeks ago and find that I'm really enjoying it. Maybe I'm just addicted to a computer screen, but I find that more and more I'd rather read from my Nook than a real book - which I didn't expect when I bought it.

I chose the NOOKcolor instead of one of the current Kindles or other Nook models because the reading material can have colors instead of just being black and gray. That makes it feel a bit more bookish to me. (The Kindle Fire was announced a few days after I'd ordered the NOOKcolor so that wasn't one of my options at the time.) I also like the fact that some of the picture books they sell in digital format can be interacted with. (Hmmmm. Maybe there's more to that computer screen idea than I want to admit.)

Once I got it, I found that I enjoy having basically an unlimited number of books to choose from when I want to read something. Thanks to a cover with an integrated stand, I enjoy the convenience of being able to sit the device up and read while I eat instead of having to hold it and avoid getting stuff on the pages. And even though I use it mainly for reading, I like the fact that you can buy a microSD card that allows you to use the device as a small android tablet in addition to its ereader purpose - which means you can open up the Kindle app when it's in android mode and read your Kindle books on a Nook.

So what about you? tell me about your experience with your e-reader.

Hi TnTexas,
I just pre-ordered The new Kindle Touch that is coming out the end of this month.

I never thought I would even consider an e-Reader until I was reading a library book that I very much enjoyed except for the struggle because the text was so small. I thought" if this was an e-book,I could enlarge the text. Shortly after that I went to Amazon to read the reviews on a book I was considering and their home page had the ad for the new Kindles and great prices plus the news that we can now borrow library books on our Kindles!
I can't wait to read with the e-ink,plus my Kindle has the Text to Speech feature so when my eyes get tired but I don't want to turn in yet,I can have the book read to me in my choice of female or male voice! I could also use this feature when driving an hour away to visit a friend of mine!

I was first considering the Nook because I read waaay more library books than I purchase, but when this became a feature of amazon's Kindle, there was no longer a choice to be made, because NO ONE tops Amazon's customer Satisfaction/Service!I chose the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi,because I want the e-ink screen, not a color, back-lit LCD screen for reading, but I won't get it until Nov.30-Dec.5th,so I have been busy downloading about 83 FREEBIE Kindle books that I can't wait to read on my Kindle.

Ok I've had my Kindle Touch Wi-Fi with Special Offers for a week now and I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE it!

Never thought I would ever say this but I prefer holding it to holding a paper book! It is so tiny and light!

I also took advantage of the Special Offer choice yesterday of one humor book from 100 for $1,and got "Hey Ranger!: True Tales of Humor & Misadventure from America's National Parks by Jim Burnett " regular price $9.99 for the Kindle Edition.

The touch screen is amazingly responsive and page turns are very fast.

I have also downloaded my first 3 Kindle library books and already read and returned one. It's so cool that I don't even have to leave the house!

I've had a Kindle for a year now, the one with the keypad. Terrific little invention these e-readers are. I get most of my ideas for books to buy from places like Literary Guild but now only get Kindle books. Love the free books that are no longer proprietary. In fact the book I'm reading now is The Adventures of Huck Finn. For anyone who reads lots of books, the e-reader is the way to go. After the initial expense of the reader, the books themselves are a bargain.

So true Poppa! I have about 143 ebooks loaded onto my Kindle from my Kindle4PC app where I loaded them while waiting for my Kindle and all but two were totally free! Many of those are now priced.

In the Kindle Forum everyday there is a post for free books with the day's date, and today I got 4 cookbooks and one is a 900+ page Polish Cookbook! I also got a Mexican/American,one,a Hungarian one,and a second Polish one.

I love knowing that I have a library of books on such a tiny device.

Thanks for the info on the daily free book list. I didn't know about that. A lot of cookbooks. I just downloaded the xmas stories although I'll have to delete it if it gets too jesus-y. Hello, Poppa.

I have the Kindle with the keypad also... have had it for about six months. I was looking for the "least expensive" reader that also had quality I could count on... like Poppa, I liked all the features that the Kindle offered as well as all the free books that are available through Amazon for the Kindle. I wish I could've held them each in my hands to compare, but had to rely on customer reviews, etc. I wish it was black-lit for reading with low light, but just got a book light I'm enjoying... the Kandle. I think I still prefer the feeling of a book in my hands, but find that I read more when I can just grab the Kindle, and that was my goal!

The type and number of books offered each day varies,Thanksgiving day there was only one offered. Remember you can also go to the Kindle store and click on Top 100 Free Books, and be sure to check it about every two days. 'kogrid' is also a good site to check and when you click on the titles you are taken to the book's Amazon(download) page.

My wife wants her own Kindle and she selected the new Touch. It's getting really good reviews and at $99 is nicely priced. I ordered one for her for a Santa delivery. For any prospective new e-reader folks out there, remember to only get one that is Wi-Fi capable regardless of the brand selected.

I don't understand Wi-Fi and 3G. I have the kindle pc app, and if I order a book, the second I click, the book is on my pc. Does the real kindle work like that? Would I have to be in range of my internet provider? I'm considering the kindle whose "pages" can be "turned" with a finger. I think it came out recently. I wonder if the pc app is wi-fi or 3g. I can't find any info about that at amazon.

I've recently jumped on the e-reader bandwagon and treated myself to the new Kindle Fire. Probably one of THE best items I've EVER purchased and now own. I LOVE it. Wi-Fi compatible. Lending library. My public library also now has Kindle books. Games. Have Netflix (app) on it, too, along with a bunch of other apps. EXCELLENT support. For anyone considering e-readers - this is the year to do it, imo.

Yusef,

3G really is not needed unless you travel out of the country frequently to areas that have no Wi-Fi.My understanding is that then you would need to DL any ebooks via the USB cable to a PC as otherwise you can only download with a Wi-Fi connection. If your ISP is Wi-Fi you will be set,if not you may want to invest in a Wi-Fi router for your home. Save the $50 extra that the 3G costs, and go with the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi with Special Offers. The Touch works like a dream and typing on the virtual keyboard is a breeze. You can learn whatever you need to know at the Kindle Forum at Amazon. DL books onto the Kindle is as fast as the Kindle For PC app, except from the library is maybe 2 seconds slower.

Thanks, Janelle. I just did a search on wi-fi, and it appears to mean wireless. So if I'm typing on computer with wireless service right now, then at least my house must be setup to accept a wi-fi kindle. Right?

"wi-fi" means wireless, yup. And yup, if you're typing on a computer with wireless service at the moment, then you are good to go to accept wi-fi kindle. Absolutely.

Enjoy!

Re:yusef,

Yep that's right, but one thing you want to check.

On the bottom of your modem is the model#.If it says WEP ect. like mine did, that is not secure enough so call your ISP and tell them you want to get a Kindle so you want a Password Protected Network. They will give you the name of your Wi-Fi network(mine is just letters and numbers) and the password. Write them down. Then when you turn your Kindle on and press the home button which looks like a vent or a speaker on the front bottom, then lightly tap Upper R corner for the menu button, then lightly tap that you will get option to 'Turn Wireless On' select that and you will see several listed. the strongest signal is most likely your network and you will recognize it's name. It will have a little lock on it showing that it is Password Protected. Lightly touch it then "Join" and enter password. Now whenever you turn on your Wireless it will use that network if you are within it's range. Happy Kindling! :]
