Hookman - searching under the stairs (have matches & unlit candle)

How do I light the candle with the matches to search under the stairs. I've tried picking up the matches and putting them over the candle in inventory & vice versa but nothing works. And I have tried putting the candle down to light it but not sure where to do that. From the little bit of help I've found on the internet, it looks like the candle should have been automatically lit when I picked up the matches. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi TopazMystique,

You don't light the candle.
Living Room: Zoom in on the telephone and find it broken.
Basement: Zoom in under the stairs, to find it too dark. Look to the right and grab the candle.
Bed Room: Find the telephone cord.
Front Room: Find the telephone ear piece and the matches in the cabinet.
Shed: Find the telephone mouth piece in the desk drawer.
Basement: Zoom in under the stairs to find the telephone dial.
Telephone: Complete it with all the parts.
Bed Room: Click on the note book and find all the pieces of paper in the room.
Note Book: Put the pieces back together to find the phone number of the police.
