LIFE Magazine assembled the world’s greatest gamers for a photo shoot that would become the center spread of their 1982 Year-In-Photos edition. The photo pictured 16 gentlemen between the ages of 14 and 30 years old, and fulfilled every typecast associated with gaming. Together, these men, including Billy L. Mitchell, who would later be named the Gamer of the Century, became the faces of video gamers for more than 25 years.
Imagine if LIFE Magazine assembled a photo of today’s greatest gamers. It would likely look very different from the photo taken in 1982, especially given the current popularity of social and mobile games. These games have attracted a new generation of gamers, and guess what, they aren’t the pimple-faced teenage boy, or socially awkward 30-something man we often pictured.
In fact, a new survey conducted online in October 2011 by Harris Interactive on behalf of GameHouse® among over 2,000 U.S. adults, more than half (55%) of online gamers (people who play online games on their computer, social networking sites, or mobile devices) are women. Based on the study, here is what we know about this new breed of gamers – women:
